Church History

Clayton Christian Church may be older than sliced bread, but even after all these years,
God is still on the move and we can't wait to see what He will do next! 

1863

On December 7, Clayton Christian Church was organized by Ministers Thomas Lockhart and O.P. Badger.
There were 63 charter members.

1865

The original building was built for $2,600.
 It now serves as Clayton's Town Hall.

1899

The Aid Society was formed. The membership grew from five to forty members. The Sunday School grew to 100 members.

1926

Sylvia Shields and her active “4L” youth class led the construction of an annex on the north side of the building. Two members of this class became prominent evangelists. 
 

1962

The first organ was purchased with a donation in memory of Paul Jackson.

1978

A baptistery was installed with scenery painted by Helen Whetstone. Sunday School rooms were constructed in the annex.
 

1988

Gary Black's first Sunday as the Senior Pastor was February 4th. Gary would then serve as the senior minister for 34 years. 

1991

The church dropped the affiliation with the Disciples of Christ which began in 1959. It returned to its original affiliation with the Independent Christian Church.

1994

Five members were part of an initial cross-cultural mission trip to Honduras in 1994. The following two years 15, then 17 members took the same trip.

1995

Purchase of 7.75 acres of land for a new building. The land was paid off in less than 12 months.  

2000

We broke ground on our land to build a new building on September 17.

2001

August 19, 2001 was the first service in the new building. September 9, 2001 was dedication day with 284 present. Doug Spencer was the guest musician. Steve White, minister of Plainfield Christian Church, was the guest preacher.

2003

January – a full Wednesday night program began for adults, teens, and children called "Family Reunion." 

2013

Clayton Christian Church celebrates 150 years! 

2016

​a Site Development Team was selected to pursue a building expansion:  Bill Jamison, Mike Clark, Jason & Amy Owen, Jon & Sarah Monday, Gary & Julie Black and Brooke Reed

​Focus groups were held throughout the church family to determine the nature of the expansion. It was decided to add a foyer, auditorium, and children’s classrooms.

2019

Construction was completed for our current extended building in June.

2022

Pastor Gary Black passes the baton to Pastor Nathan Robinson as our Senior Minister. Pastor Nathan started his first day on September 25, 2022.
